Serving the Community for 3 Generations
Somerville Lumber opened for business in nearby Somerville, NJ in 1935. Founded by Abe Schumer, the business originally sold building materials reclaimed from demolished buildings. As business began to grow, we moved to its current location in Bridgewater.
Abe's son, Jack took over the business and was instrumental in modernizing and expanding the company. Based on a culture of Customer Service, Somerville Lumber was hugely successful as a provider of quality building materials to both the contractor and to homeowners. Jack's wife, Susan, joined the company as business began to grow and helped to enhance the product lines from her understanding of the customer's perspective.
Daughters Didi and Stacie joined the company, adding their experience in business and advertising and helped the business to grow to a full-scale operation employing over 65 people. Jack Schumer passed away in 2001 and the company continues to flourish under the direction of his wife Susan and Vice President/General Manager, Ken Kovacs.
The business continues to grow as our decking department is now the DeckCenter and moved to occupy its own space 2 doors down with over 6000 square feet of indoor decking and outdoor living displays. In 2017 we opened a second DeckCenter location in Flemington, NJ which enjoyed a successful first year.
We also expanded our showrooms to include our DoorCenter, Kitchen&BathCenter, WindowCenter and FloorCenter, creating a unique shopping experience for our customers.
Today, Somerville Lumber continues to grow and serve the community. Our values remain the same since the beginning:
• Provide the best quality product at a great price.
• Place customer satisfaction at the top of our priorities.
• Stay involved in community service.
• Build personal relationships with our customers.
• Look for new products and services to offer our clients.
